I, Too, Sing America
by Langston Hughes

I, too, sing America.

I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes,
But I laugh,
And eat well,
And grow strong.

Tomorrow,
I'll be at the table
When company comes.
Nobody will dare
Say to me,
"Eat in the kitchen,"
Then.

Besides,
They'll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed--

I, too, am America.

In honor of Black History Month coming in February, I'd like my students to read the Langston Hughes poem and comment on the political aspect of the poem. Why is this a timely poem to study? What do you think Hughes trying to say about "his" place in America?

We recently viewed the movie, The Color Purple. Choose a question below and post a comment:

What groups were represented as being oppressed?

Name the character you believe had the most oppression and tell why you think their case was the worst.

Who was your favorite character? Why?

Why did Mr. Albert kick out Nettie?

Who was the protagonist in the story?

Why did Celie give up her smile?
